Immanuel

Arise, O earth, cast off your pride and sing!

The healing Dawn has risen upon your race,

To strip off the veil from your gaunt face.

Let shouts of joy and praises be heard in you!

All you sons of dust, exult and worship the King—

Come in His grace to make all things new;

God with us, forever the Faithful and True!

Come, behold the stupendous mystery!

The Creator-God in the likeness of man—

A creature of dust in whose nostrils is breath,

A cosmic traitor utterly deprived of health,

Subject from the womb to sin’s mastery,

By his evil deeds consigned to death.

Behold the Commander of the LORD’s army,

Sweating drops of blood for us in Gethsemane—

Come in His love to save a great multitude!

See the Infinite lowly wrapped in finitude,

The Immortal meekly subject to mortality,

The King of glory clothed with humility!

A sacrifice He became to end our misery,

He, the Holy One, laden with our iniquity,

Crushed to set us free from sin’s penalty.

O heaven and earth, who like our God is worthy?

Ascribe to our Redeemer honor and glory!

So vast a love—who can comprehend its depth?

Who else could redeem and deliver us from death?

Look to Golgotha, behold the Author of life,

He who sustains all things, gasping for breath;

The Eternal One in agony on a tree,

A gracious ransom for those who hate Him—

Rebellious sinners whom no man can free.

See in His holy hand the cup filled to the brim—

His pure frame willingly lent to bring us peace.

Give glory to our God, the Wellspring of wealth!

He has drained the cup to restore us to health;

Enmity and strife, by grace He has caused to cease.

Behold the Lamb with seven horns,

By sinful hands crowned with sharp thorns!

For our sake His sinless body was torn,

That our souls with life might be adorned.

Light of the world, our gloom He ends.

Wonderful Counselor, our ways He mends.

Gracious Redeemer, our souls He sets free.

To us, O Lord, You have granted liberty

And put an end to our deathly poverty.

From before the ages, such was Your decree.

You, O Healing Sun of righteousness,

The breath of life You graciously impart;

Your heritage, O Immanuel, You have set apart.

Once utterly swallowed up by darkness,

We have been freed by Your lovingkindness.

From You, O King, the scepter shall not depart!

From everlasting Yours, O God, is sovereignty.

You are majestically crowned with many diadems,

Uniquely clothed with resplendent beauty.

You, LORD, have condescended to our frailty;

By Your grace, O God, we are no longer condemned.

Your holy blood has cleansed us from every stain;

You have put an end to our painful strain.

Glory be to Christ, for His eternal reign!

In His might He caused us to be born again.

Praise be to the LORD, the God of all grace!

Swallowed up is the veil and gone the disgrace!
